Community Guidelines
Booknook is a space for book lovers to connect and share. To keep it welcoming for everyone, we ask that all members follow these guidelines.
1. Be Respectful
Treat every member with kindness. Disagreements about books are fine — personal attacks, insults, and harassment are not.
2. No Hate Speech
Content that promotes hatred, discrimination, or violence based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, or any other characteristic is strictly prohibited.
3. No Spam or Self-Promotion
Do not post unsolicited advertisements, affiliate links, or repetitive promotional content. Genuine book recommendations are always welcome.
4. No Inappropriate Content
Keep content appropriate for a general audience. Explicit sexual content, graphic violence, or disturbing imagery is not permitted.
5. Respect Privacy
Do not share personal information about others without their consent. Do not impersonate another person.
6. Report and Block
If you see content or encounter a member that violates these guidelines, use the report or block buttons within the app. Our team reviews all reports within 24 hours. Blocking a user will immediately hide their content and prevent them from contacting you.
7. Consequences
Violations of these guidelines may result in content removal, temporary suspension, or permanent account termination depending on severity.

Privacy Policy
Booknook ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy describes what personal information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.
1. Information We Collect
Account information. When you register or sign in via Google, Facebook, or Apple, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture from that provider. If you sign up with email and password, we store your email address and a hashed password.
Profile data you provide. Display name, bio, avatar, and any other profile details you choose to add.
Reading activity. Books you add to your library, reading sessions (start/end dates, page counts), ratings, reviews, reading challenges and goals, wishlists, collections, and lists.
Social activity. Friends and followers, posts, comments, and shared lists or collections.
Usage data. Pages visited, features used, and standard server logs (IP address, browser/device type, timestamps). We do not currently use third-party analytics.
2. How We Use Your Information
- Provide, operate, and improve the Booknook service.
- Personalise your experience (e.g. reading stats, recommendations).
- Enable social features — show your activity to friends you follow and who follow you.
- Send transactional messages (e.g. password reset, critical service notices). We do not send marketing emails without your explicit consent.
- Detect and prevent fraud or abuse.
3. How We Share Your Information
We do not sell your personal data. We share data only in these limited circumstances:
- With other users. Content you post (reviews, lists, collections) and basic profile details are visible to other Booknook users according to your privacy settings.
- Service providers. We use Firebase (Google) for authentication, database, and file storage. These providers process data on our behalf under their own privacy commitments.
- Book metadata APIs. When you search for or add a book, we query third-party APIs (Hardcover, Google Books, ISBNdb, Open Library) using only the book ISBN or title — no personal data is sent.
- Legal requirements. We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights and safety of our users.
4. Data Retention
We retain your data for as long as your account is active. You can delete your account at any time (see Section 7 below). After deletion, we remove personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law.
5. Security
We use industry-standard measures including encrypted connections (HTTPS), Firebase Authentication, and access-controlled cloud infrastructure. No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security.
6. Children's Privacy
Booknook is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us data, please contact us and we will delete it.
7. Your Rights & Choices
- Access & correction. Update your profile information at any time from the Profile settings.
- Account deletion. Go to Profile → Settings → Delete Account, or email us at support@booknook-app.com. All your data will be permanently deleted.
- Data export. Contact us to request a copy of your data.

- Use automated means to scrape or abuse the service without prior written permission.
- Attempt to gain unauthorised access to our systems or other users' accounts.
4. User Content
You retain ownership of content you post (reviews, lists, etc.). By posting, you grant Booknook a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, display, and share that content as part of the service. You represent that you have the right to grant this licence.
5. Book Metadata
Book metadata (titles, covers, descriptions) is sourced from third-party databases. We do not claim ownership of this data and make no warranties about its accuracy.
6. Disclaimers
Booknook is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. We do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation.

11. Subscriptions and Purchases
Booknook offers optional paid subscriptions ("Premium") processed through our secure payment provider. Subscriptions automatically renew at the end of each billing period (monthly or annual) unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the renewal date. For subscriptions purchased through the Apple App Store or Google Play, you can manage or cancel them at any time in your App Store or Google Play account settings; for web subscriptions, via Profile → Settings → Subscription. You may also contact us at support@booknook-app.com. Prices are displayed in your local currency at the time of purchase. We reserve the right to change pricing with reasonable notice.
12. Referral Program
Booknook may offer a referral program that rewards members for inviting friends. The following terms apply whenever the program is active.
- Eligibility. Referral rewards are for new members only. A referral code must be applied by an account within 14 days of that account being created, and each member may be referred only once, ever.
- Rewards. When a referred friend completes onboarding and adds their first book, both that friend and the referring member receive one free month of Premium. Each member may earn one referral reward as a referrer. Free months are added on top of any existing Premium time, have no cash value, and cannot be transferred, sold, or refunded.
- Fair use. You may not refer yourself, create accounts in order to refer them, or otherwise manipulate the program. We may withhold or revoke rewards, and suspend or disqualify accounts, that we believe are engaged in fraudulent, abusive, or self-dealing activity.
- Changes. Booknook may modify, suspend, or end the referral program, or change these terms, at any time and without notice.
